Underwater noise

Contact information

When constructing foundations for wind turbines and other offshore structures, pile driving into the seabed is often used. This method ensures a stable and durable foundation, but can also produce underwater noise levels that disturb marine life, particularly marine mammals and fish. Over the past years, various international authorities have assessed the risks associated with underwater noise, which has led to specific regulations. In the Netherlands, the so-called kavelbesluiten set permissible underwater noise levels for the construction of offshore wind farms. In German waters, the regulations of the Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH) apply.

    Research and consultancy

We support clients in predicting, measuring, and managing underwater noise during offshore activities. Based on calculations and modelling, we map the expected noise exposure and assess whether it complies with applicable standards. Where necessary, we advise on mitigation measures such as the use of bubble curtains or other noise-reduction techniques.

With our expertise, we contribute to the responsible execution of offshore projects, ensuring that ecological considerations are carefully integrated into the process.
