External Fire Exposure Test (Burning Brand Test)

Contact information

The burning brand test assesses the fire hazard of roofing materials and roof constructions in accordance with CEN/TS 1187 Test Method 1. In this test, a basket filled with burning wood wool is used to simulate an external fire caused by burning brands. Burning brands can originate from ignited parts of nearby buildings.

The fire is extinguished after 30 minutes, and 60 minutes after ignition the fire spread and damage to all layers of the test specimen are evaluated.

To investigate the influence of joints and construction layers on fire spread, the tests are carried out using four different specimen configurations. These vary in the position of joints in the roofing material or underlying insulation: both vertical and horizontal joints in the top layer, as well as in the layers beneath. The underlying construction also determines where the test results are applicable.

For extension of the field of application of the classification of test results, Extended Application CEN/TS 16459 Annex A applies.
