In 2018, Banzo began construction of the household waste separation plant at AVR, located in Rozenburg. This facility processes residual household waste from the cities of Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht. The total capacity of the two lines is 430,000 tons per year. The first line was commissioned in December 2018, and the second line became operational in the spring of 2019. This separation plant enables the recovery of plastics and beverage cartons from residual waste. In the first year alone, a separation efficiency of 51% was achieved, with a purity level of 90%. Since the plant was commissioned, AVR has been separating residual waste from the municipalities of Rotterdam, Barendrecht, The Hague, Leiden, and Utrecht. Starting in 2020, the municipalities of Den Bosch, Leiderdorp, Oegstgeest, Goeree-Overflakkee, and four municipalities in Zeeland also joined. The recovered plastics and beverage cartons are sorted and/or directly delivered to recyclers. In the first year, 19.2 million kilograms of plastics and beverage cartons were separated from residual waste, equivalent to a COâ‚‚ reduction of approximately 24,000 tons per year (source: AVR).

The separation units (vibrating screens) are mounted on a steel structure inside the hall. It was found that the steel structure vibrates significantly when the screens are in operation. To gain more insight into the dynamic properties of the steel structure supporting the vibrating screens, on-site vibration measurements were carried out. An electrodynamic shaker was used for this measurement. This shaker can excite the structure at various frequencies to determine its dynamic behavior. Understanding the dynamic behavior is necessary to identify potential mitigation measures. Based on the measurement results and structural drawings, a Finite Element Model (FEM) of the steel structure was developed and verified. Using this computational model, the effect of possible measures was assessed. This included adding extra mass and additional steel beams to the structure. As a result of these measures, vibration velocities were reduced by a factor of 10.
